Summary of Pre-service Teachers' Self-reported Skills in Using ICT Applications
The following four graphs summarize the range of pre-service teachers at each of the four levels of ICT technical skill: Beginning, Developing, Accomplished, and Exemplary. These graphs lead us to the following conclusions:
- Most pre-service teachers report not having any skills with
- web page creation (79%)
- digital imaging (63%)
- multimedia (56%)
- videography/video editing (48%) (Beginning level)
- Most pre-service teachers identify themselves as starting to develop skills in
- networking (69%)
- concept mapping (60%)
- database use (45%)
- spreadsheet use (46%)
- videography/video editing (45%) (Developing level)
- Overall, most pre-service teachers assess themselves as competent in
- file management (82%)
- word processing (74%)
- email (57%)
- basic computer operations (51%)
- Internet searching (45%) (Accomplished level)
- Most pre-service teachers use email and the Internet, although most of them have not taught students to do so.
- During their student-teaching practicum, pre-service teachers have mostly taught their students skills only in basic computer operation and word processing. (Exemplary level)
- It is expected that pre-service teachers would not yet have had much opportunity to teach ICT application skills during their student-teaching practicum. In order to better prepare teacher candidates to apply ICT in their future professional practice, it is recommended that they receive training in
- web page creation
- digital imaging
- multimedia
- videography/video editing
- concept mapping
- database use
- spreadsheet use
