The Science Curriculum Essentials present the big ideas in the study of science from Grades 1 to 8.
The documents can be viewed online or printed. The interactive PDFs link to provincial curriculum documents.
The Grade at a Glance page contains two parts. The yellow arrow at the top of the page highlights the science practices from Cluster 0 that need to be integrated throughout the teaching and learning of science to deepen the understanding of concepts and to provide exposure to the many approaches that are used in science and technology. The second part of the Grade at a Glance page provides an overview of the big ideas in each grade level cluster and the associated specific learning outcomes.
The Science Curriculum Overview offers a more detailed description about the expectations at each grade level organized around these same big ideas, which are the concepts and practices at the heart of the curriculum and around which the specific learning outcomes were developed. The big ideas help when assessing learning. The numbers under each big idea represent the specific learning outcomes. On the interactive PDF, the numbers link to the provincial curriculum documents.
The yellow band on the left of the page connects the science curriculum to the provincial report card science categories. The yellow band on the interactive PDFs link to provincial report card documents. The yellow “Scientific inquiry tab” links to a graphical representation of the components of science inquiry, while the “Design process” tab links to a graphical representation of the components of the design process.
The third page describes the scientific practices from Cluster 0 which support students in acquiring a better understanding of how scientific knowledge is produced.
