Recipients:
Darren Alford, Laura Buller, and Rhianna Church
Elmwood High School
Winnipeg School Division

In the past few years, the team of Alford, Buller and Church has built up the school’s Student Success Centre (SSC), resulting in a substantial positive impact on the student population. All three members play a vital role in creating a learning environment of trust, care and respect, while meeting a wide range of students’ needs, both social-emotional and academic. Buller, the SSC lead, focuses on providing social-emotional support and strategies, and acts as the bridge between home, school and community by connecting students and their families with resources and outside agencies. Alford and Church provide the academic structure and curricular supports to ensure that students succeed in earning their credits. During the pandemic, even with additional course loads, the team managed to maintain the centre’s services and stay connected with students during remote learning and during the suspension of classes. A Google Classroom site was set up by Alford who has a strong technology background. Although student participation in SSC is voluntary, approximately two-thirds of senior years’ students access its services. As a result, Elmwood has seen a significant increase in the graduation rate. The impact of the centre cannot be underestimated. Thanks to the collaborative work and infectious enthusiasm of Alford, Buller, and Church, the SSC has become a hub where students and staff come together as a community to work toward a successful future path for every student.

Outstanding Team Collaboration Award

Photo of David Day Photo of Arista Ryback

Recipients:

David Day and Arista Ryback
Nelson McIntyre Collegiate
Louis Riel School Division

As the physical education/health education (PE/HE) team at Nelson McIntyre Collegiate, Day and Ryback have reimagined the physical education programming to align with the school’s goals and vision of creating self-directed learners, creative problem-solvers and active citizens using a project-based learning approach. Together, they conducted research and developed a model of physical education that allows students to choose from a wide variety of two-week themed blocks that fit with their interests and schedules including out-of-school blocks on evenings and weekends with activities such as canoeing, hiking, martial arts, wall climbing and others. To make the year-long PE/HE model work, Day and Ryback divided blocks between each other based on their area of expertise and collaborated with the divisional Information Systems Department to determine how to track students’ progress, all of which was logistically challenging. The new model provides opportunities for student voice and choice; for deep inquiry, skill development, and understanding; and for the growth of soft skills like time management and goal setting. The rubrics used help change the emphasis to effort from performance, which has increased student engagement. To adapt to the pandemic, the model was revamped to experience PE outside. Even with the cold, student attendance and enthusiasm remained high. By working together, Day and Ryback were able to successfully reinvent the mindset and practice of the school’s physical education/health education program.
