Health Care Directives
A Health Care Directive (Advanced Care Plan) is a written document that ensures an individual or family’s wishes are clear and easily understood by medical personnel who will be providing medical treatment. In Manitoba, the Health Care Directives Act allows individuals or caregivers to accept or refuse medical treatment at any time.
If the parent/guardian requests the community program to implement the Health Care Directive (Advanced Care Plan) for their child, the community program is not required to do so if it is not consistent with the emergency response plan that applies to all children registered in the community program. However, the community program is advised to retain a copy of the Health Care Directive and ensure it is communicated to medical personnel (e.g. paramedics) in the event that 911/EMS is activated by the community program.
