French – English Program

French Courses

The Bureau de l’éducation française (BEF) supports the effective learning of French in English schools from Kindergarten to Grade 12. The French course has two programs:

• Early Start French – Kindergarten to Grade 3
• French: Communication and Culture – Grades 4 to 12

These programs offer a new vision, new goals and guiding principles that are directed by a balanced literacy based approach ( 410 KB). This approach balances the literacy skills of oral communication, reading and writing with a emphasis on oral communication.

Vision and Goals

The French courses aim to provide all students in Manitoba with quality French instruction which enables them to communicate in the French language and to appreciate francophone cultures.

The goals of the courses are to give students the opportunity to:

• acquire the necessary language skills to communicate in French;
• value the learning of French as a tool for personal, intellectual, and social growth;
• demonstrate an appreciation of Francophone cultures;
• further develop intercultural communication skills that are essential to all global citizens.
