This resource supports educators in creating a culture in their classroom that intentionally fosters learners’ connection to self. Examples of practices, strategies, and pedagogical approaches are included that allow this competency to flourish in a classroom.
- Design learner-centred learning experiences that help learners discover and develop their identities, strengths, and gifts.
- Co-construct skills and habits for self-regulation of emotions, thoughts, and behaviour.
- Model and share decision-making processes and strategies for goal setting.
- Help learners to develop learner agency by gradually releasing responsibility to them and providing opportunities for active learning, genuine decision-making, student-led inquiry, and student voice.
- Support learners in working through uncertainty during the learning process by asking them guiding questions rather than providing them with answers.
- Embed and connect reflective processes to both the content and the process of learning.
- Find regular opportunities to shift your role as teacher from expert to facilitator/coach of learning. Defront the classroom (i.e., arrange the classroom furniture so it does not all face the front of the room).
