Grade 12 Applied Mathematics

Course Overview

Grade 12 Applied Mathematics students will develop number sense in financial applications involving compound interest, analyzing an investment portfolio, and analyzing the costs and benefits of renting, leasing, and buying. They will develop logical reasoning by analyzing puzzles and games, explaining the application of set theory, and analyzing conditional statements. Students will develop critical-thinking skills related to uncertainty involving interpreting and assessing probability statements and events, fundamental counting principle, permutations, and combinations. They will develop algebraic and graphical reasoning through the study of relations by representing data using polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, and sinusoidal functions. Students will develop an appreciation of the role of mathematics in society by researching and presenting on a current event or an area of interest that involves mathematics. They will develop critical-thinking skills related to measurement design by analyzing objects, shapes, processes, and related costs.

Guiding Principles for the Design of Learning Experiences and Assessment Practices

The Guiding Principles for the Design of Learning Experiences and Assessment Practices provide guidance to all Manitoba educators as they design learning experiences and classroom assessments to strengthen, extend, and expand student learning. Planning with the learner, the context, and the curricula in mind creates opportunities for the co-construction of inclusive learning experiences and assessment practices where the diverse learning needs, abilities, and interests of each learner are met.

Assessment for and as learning involve learners in the process and support learner reflection; assessment of learning (commonly known as summative evaluation) measures final outcomes. All aspects, when done well, contribute to informed teaching and reliable judgment of learner progress.

Guiding Principles for Evaluation and Reporting

The Guiding Principles for Evaluation and Reporting are currently still under development and not yet available. When completed, a notification will be added to the Manitoba Framework for Learning “What’s New?” page on the website.

Learning Outcomes

General Learning Outcome: Develop number sense in financial applications.

  • 12A.FM.1. Solve problems that involve compound interest in financial decision-making.
    [C, CN, PS, T, V]

  • 12A.FM.2. Analyze costs and benefits of renting, leasing, and buying.
    [CN, PS, R, T]

  • 12A.FM.3. Analyze an investment portfolio in terms of

    • interest rate
    • rate of return
    • total return

    [ME, PS, R, T]

Students should be able to solve an investment problem using tools such as debt-to-equity ratio, gross debt service ratio, or net worth.

General Learning Outcome: Develop logical reasoning.

  • 12A.L.1. Analyze puzzles and games that involve numerical and logical reasoning, using problem-solving strategies.
    [CN, ME, PS, R, T]

It is intended that this learning outcome be integrated throughout the course by using games and puzzles such as chess, Sudoku, Nim, logic puzzles, magic squares, Kakuro, and cribbage.
  • 12A.L.2. Solve problems that involve the application of set theory.
    [CN, PS, R, T, V]

  • 12A.L.3. Solve problems that involve conditional statements.
    [C, CN, PS, R, T]

General Learning Outcome: Develop critical-thinking skills related to uncertainty.

  • 12A.P.1. Interpret and assess the validity of odds and probability statements.
    [C, CN, ME, T]

  • 12A.P.2. Solve problems that involve the probability of mutually exclusive and non-mutually exclusive events.
    [CN, PS, R, T, V]

  • 12A.P.3. Solve problems that involve the probability of independent and dependent events.
    [CN, PS, R, T]

  • 12A.P.4. Solve problems that involve the fundamental counting principle.
    [PS, R, T, V]

  • 12A.P.5. Solve problems that involve permutations.
    [ME, PS, R, T, V]

Students should be able to use strategies such as cases or grouping objects together to solve a contextual problem. Also, it is intended that circular permutations not be included.
  • 12A.P.6. Solve problems that involve combinations.
    [ME, PS, R, T, V]

General Learning Outcome: Develop algebraic and graphical reasoning through the study of relations.

  • 12A.R.1. Represent data, using polynomial functions (of degree ≤ 3), to solve problems.
    [C, CN, PS, T, V]

  • 12A.R.2. Represent data, using exponential and logarithmic functions, to solve problems.
    [C, CN, PS, T, V]

  • 12A.R.3. Represent data, using sinusoidal functions, to solve problems.
    [C, CN, PS, T, V]

General Learning Outcome: Develop an appreciation of the role of mathematics in society.

  • 12A.RP.1. Research and give a presentation on a current event or an area of interest that involves mathematics.
    [C, CN, ME, PS, R, T, V]

General Learning Outcome: Develop critical-thinking skills related to measurement design.

  • 12A.D.1. Analyze objects, shapes, and processes to solve cost and design problems.
    [C, CN, ME, PS, R, T, V]
