  • Home Community:
Wauzhushk Onigum Nation but currently reside in Winnipeg.
  • Cultural Identity:
    First Nation
  • Current Position:
Student Services Teacher at Dakota Collegiate
  • Education/Training:
I went to 11 different schools from k-12. I think it’s important to mention that because it taught me the importance of connection and of listening. It was tough to be the new person in new schools and communities. I graduated from the University Winnipeg’s Community Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (CATEP) in 2012. Although a degree allows me to be a teacher by trade, the most important part of my education has come from listening and learning from friends, family, Elders and my children.
  • Roles/Responsibilities:
My current roles and responsibilities include connecting students and teachers, teachers and families or the system and community. I work as an advocate for student success by helping youth to find their gifts and for the system to celebrate them.
“Teachings come from everywhere when you open yourself to them. That’s the trick of it, really. Open yourself to everything and everything opens itself to you.” — Richard Wagamese

What obstacles did you face and how did you overcome them?
I think we all face obstacles and using them as opportunities to learn has been part of my own journey.

What or who inspired you to really go after the profession you are in now?
I have been lucky to have many strong women in my life who have encouraged me or opened doors for me. The one who inspired me to be better is my daughter.

What critical choices or decisions did you make that helped you get where you are today?
I have always questioned things that don’t make sense to me. Some see it as a benefit, while others see it as a challenge. I believe it is a simple question (Why?) that I chose to ask of myself and of others, that has put me on my current path.

Message of Encouragement:
